Component 7: Employee Training
Training has become a critical element of any Employee Relations Program. The courts and some state legislatures have established requirements for sexual harassment training in order for employers to limit their liability for hostile work environment claims.
HRCRRA views training as an opportunity to perform several critical HR functions beyond providing sexual harassment training.
First, as mentioned above, it provides an opportunity to interact with employees and managers to provide input on compliance with established policies and procedures.
Second, and more important, it provides a “safe haven” whereby employees may be encouraged to report potential complaints. That is, during the training session, employee often will relate instances which may, or may not, be violations of human resource policies. These training sessions often provide an adjunct to the independent complaint process.
The types of training include:
- Employment Policy Training (Training of Employees and Managers on established employment policies)
- Sexual Harassment Training for Employees/Managers
- Employee/Manager Ethics (Incorporates both general rules of ethics and requirements of Sarbanes-Oxley)
- Use of Complaint Proceedings (Reinforces requirements of making complaints through important procedures)
- Human Relations Training (Used with employers who experience interpersonal problems)
